Akira WIne

In the heart of Broome, a town teeming with unique characters, each with a tale to share. Akira Masuda stands out as a living testament to the region’s rich heritage. At 88 years old, this former pearl diver embodies the spirit of a bygone era. His life’s work mirrors the history of his hometown, a place once defined by the perilous yet lucrative pearling industry. Today, Masuda is a familiar sight on the balcony of the Roebuck Bay Hotel, affectionately known as “The Roey,” observing the world with the wisdom of someone who has seen the tides of time change the face of Broome.

The Roey: A Cornerstone of Broome’s Pearling History

The story of The Roey is as layered and lustrous as the pearls that put Broome on the map. Established in 1890 by E.W. Streeter, a London jeweller with pearling interests in Broome and Southeast Asia, The Roebuck Bay Hotel is one of Broome’s original landmarks. Streeter, also the founder of Streeters’ Store, was a pivotal figure in the town’s early development, offering pearls and mother of pearl to both visitors and locals.

Designed as a haven for the hardworking pearling lugger crews, The Roey offered a place to relax and share tales of the sea after grueling days under the sun. Despite the destruction of the original building by a fire in 1904, it was swiftly rebuilt, retaining its essence and continuing to serve as a gathering spot for the community.

More Than a Hotel: The Roey’s Role in Broome’s Community

The Roebuck Bay Hotel is more than just a building; it’s a cornerstone of Broome’s history and cultural fabric. It has played a pivotal role in the development of this beautiful town and in fostering the strong community bonds that characterize Broome. Visiting The Roey is not just about enjoying a drink or a meal; it’s about connecting with the soul of the town, experiencing the authentic spirit of Broome, and perhaps, catching a glimpse of Akira Masuda on the balcony, a reminder of the enduring legacy of Broome’s pearling past.
